Hello Foodies! Only 3 days left until CHRISTMAS! Are you excited? I still have some shopping to do which is so tardy of me because now I’ll be stuck in long line-ups at the mall. I don’t like being so last minute but this year has just been so busy. Hopefully I can get in and out of the mall within 1 hour max, but that’s just wishful thinking. With the hustle and bustle of the season a lot of people tend to skip out on important meals such as breakfast. We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it doesn’t have to always be a lavish pancake, bacon, egg ensemble! It can be as simple as yogurt with fruit, toast with almond butter, or one of my favourites…OATMEAL! I never used to like oatmeal because of the mushy texture but I’ve learned to absolutely love it. I tend to always use a little less water so that it’s not overly runny. My preferred choice of oatmeal is steel-cut oats but I don’t always have the time to prepare it. I have tried many of the instant oatmeal brands available but they just don’t do it for me, they taste really sweet and artificial. I recently discovered Sally’s Cereal brands at Loblaw’s and decided to give it a try. The main reason I bought this package of instant oatmeal is because it was cheap (only $2 for a package of 5 pouches), it is multigrain with flax and it’s organic. There were three flavors on the shelf, plain grain, apples and cinnamon and maple and brown sugar. I went for the plain grain because I like to add my own toppings to jazz it up.
I brought the box to work the next day and tried it out. The package is really cute (I’m a sucker for packaging) and what was even more cute is that each individual pouch can be used as a measuring cup! You just empty the oatmeal into your bowl and then fill the package up to the water line indicated and voila, there’s your 2/3 cups of water. Microwave on high for 2 minutes and and you’ve got your oatmeal. I jazzed mine up with a square of 80% dark chocolate and sliced up bananas. The consistency is great, not gooey at all. It’s the perfect amount of oatmeal as well and it really does leave you feeling full all morning. I am so happy with this product that I stocked up and bought about 3 boxes the next day.
The nutrition facts per one pouch of the plain grain oatmeal is:
Overall this product is fantastic for those who like to shop organic brands but cringe every time the price tag reads $6.99 for a box of all-natural cereal. This is such a budget-friendly alternative and it doesn’t skimp out on taste. This product has recently become available at all Wal-Marts in Canada and I picked up a few of the other flavours like chai and dark chocolate for less than $2! If you’re always in a rush in the morning like me, this breakfast option only takes a few minutes to prepare. The topping options are endless and some of my faves are:
- Banana and dark chocolate
- Slivered almonds, cinnamon and chopped apple
- Chia seeds, raw cocoa nibs and unsweetened coconut flakes
